In response to the recent brutal assault on a female nurse in Nsukka town, Enugu State, the activities of masquerades across the nine communities in the area have been brought to an abrupt halt.

The assault, which occurred as the nurse was en route to her duty call, sent shockwaves through the community, prompting swift action from local stakeholders.

A meeting convened by the Nsukka Town Federated Union, attended by representatives from various community bodies including the Oha Nsukka, the Akpuruaru Nsukka, traditional leaders, and youth groups, resulted in a unanimous decision to suspend all masquerade operations indefinitely.

This decision was made in light of the recent attack and is intended to allow the Council of Elders time to investigate the incident thoroughly and devise new guidelines for masquerade performances.

The resolution emphasized the importance of enforcing the suspension with the assistance of all relevant security agencies.

Furthermore, the Otobo Nsukka Cultural Zone Community Developmental Initiative, a local NGO, has expressed support for the decision, commending the swift action taken by community leaders to address the assault and ensure the safety of residents.

In a statement released by the NGO, they praised the commitment of the Council of Elders to the well-being of the community and urged all stakeholders to cooperate with the ongoing process to establish new protocols for masquerade activities.

As the community grapples with the aftermath of this disturbing incident, efforts are underway to restore a sense of safety and security for all residents of Nsukka town.
