Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu, the inaugural civil governor of Abia State and a former Minister of Science and Technology, has tragically passed away at the age of 72. According to a source close to the deceased, who spoke to the Tribune online on Thursday, Dr. Onu succumbed to a brief illness while receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital in Nigeria.


The late statesman, known for his contributions to both state and federal governance, had a storied political career. Despite his tenure as governor of old Abia State, Dr. Onu sought to further serve the nation by contesting for the presidential ticket of the All Progressive Congress (APC) during the 2023 general election. However, he ultimately lost the party's nomination to Ahmed Tinubu.
