Federal Government Holds Emergency Meeting with Labour Unions to Avert Nationwide Protests

The Federal Government is currently engaged in a high-stakes emergency meeting with prominent labour unions, including the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC), in a concerted effort to forestall the looming two-day national protests. These protests, slated to occur on Tuesday and Wednesday, are a response to the widespread hardship experienced by Nigerians.

Chaired by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, the closed-door meeting signifies a critical attempt to address the grievances fueling the planned demonstrations. Mr. Segun Imohiosen, Director of Information at the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF), confirmed the occurrence of the meeting but abstained from providing further details.

Despite warnings from various quarters, including the Department of State Services and the Attorney-General of the Federation, urging dialogue over protests due to potential threats to national security and legal ramifications, the NLC remains resolute in its determination to proceed with the planned protests. The NLC President, Joe Ajaero, is slated to lead the demonstrations across all 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory.

Amid escalating tensions, both sides stand firm in their positions, with labour unions and civil society organizations emphasizing the peaceful nature of their intended protest. The outcome of this emergency meeting holds significant implications for the socio-political landscape of Nigeria, as stakeholders navigate a delicate balance between addressing citizen grievances and maintaining national stability.
