Veteran Nigerian comedian and actor, Okechukwu Anthony Onyegbule, popularly known as Okey Bakassi, has been appointed as the traditional ruler of the Umuihuocha Obohia Autonomous Community in the Ahiazu Mbaise Local Government Area of Imo State.

Upon his coronation, he will assume the title of His Royal Highness Eze Okechukwu Onyegbule, the OKWE II of Umuihuocha Obohia Autonomous Community.

The Umuihuocha Autonomous Community is a well-established community in the Mbaise region of Imo State. Bakassi is the only Nigerian entertainer to have recently taken on the role of a traditional ruler. The title of OKWE II suggests that Okey Bakassi is the second ruler to bear this designation, indicating succession from a predecessor, referred to as OKWE I, although further details about the previous ruler are not readily available.

In a social media post shared on Sunday, the 55-year-old entertainer expressed his gratitude for the honour, describing the responsibility as one of “Service to Humanity” and “Service to Community.”

Bakassi also took a moment to thank the people of his community for placing their trust in him.

His appointment has received widespread congratulations from friends, colleagues, and fans. Fellow comedian Gbenga Adeyinka offered a heartfelt message, stating:

“Congratulations on your new elevation by the Umuihuocha Autonomous Community! This is a remarkable achievement, and I pray for your continued success in this important role. May you inspire positive change and demonstrate impressive leadership as you guide your community. Kudos to your community for making such an excellent choice in selecting such a distinguished gentleman and an outstanding leader of men. Best wishes to you and the community! Warm regards, my brother.”

Shaibu Husseini, the executive director of the National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB), also referred to him as “Ichie Na Umuihoichia.”

Beyond his successful entertainment career, Okey Bakassi has previously served as senior special adviser (SSA) on entertainment matters to former Imo State Governor Ikedi Ohakim.

Bakassi’s ascension to the throne marks a pivotal moment in his life, highlighting his deep connection to his roots and his commitment to serving his community.

The coronation ceremony is expected to attract prominent figures from various sectors, including traditional, religious, and political leaders. Although the date has not been confirmed, preparations are already underway to ensure a memorable event.
