Major General Paul Ufuoma Omu (Rtd), a distinguished Nigerian military officer and former military governor of the old South-Eastern State (now Cross River and Akwa Ibom States), has passed away at the age of 84. His family announced his death on Tuesday, April 29, 2025, in a statement released from Warri, Delta State.
Born in Igbide, Isoko South Local Government Area of Delta State, General Omu's career spanned several decades, during which he served Nigeria in various capacities. He was appointed as the military governor of the South-Eastern State from July 1975 to July 1978, a period marked by significant development efforts and reforms aimed at supporting the region's growth.
Beyond his governorship, General Omu held several key positions within Nigeria's military and political spheres. In 1985, he became the Commandant of the Nigerian Defence Academy and was a member of the Armed Forces Ruling Council, the highest decision-making body in the country at the time. His role in Nigeria's transition to democratic rule was also notable; in 1994, he chaired the Constitutional Conference Commission, contributing to discussions that shaped the nation's political future.
In 2009, President Umaru Musa Yar'Adua appointed him as the chairman of the governing board of the National Institute of Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), an institution dedicated to training top public servants and policymakers.
General Omu remained active in community development, particularly in his hometown. As president of the Isoko Development Union between 2014 and 2015, he promoted education and local progress, earning widespread respect for his leadership and dedication to his people.
He is survived by his wife, former senator Chief Stella Omu, six children, siblings, and grandchildren. The family has indicated that details regarding his burial will be announced at a later date.
