Governor Mbah Pays Last Respects As Ex-Minister, Dubem Onyia Is Laid To Rest

Former Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Chief Dubem Onyia, was laid to rest on Friday, May 2, 2025, in Ngwo, Enugu State. The funeral mass, held at St. Mary’s Catholic Church and presided over by Most Reverend Callistus Onaga, Bishop of Enugu Diocese, drew numerous dignitaries, including Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah.



Governor Mbah honored Chief Onyia as a "moral compass" and "towering figure," emphasizing his enduring legacy in public service and private life. He urged attendees to find solace in Onyia's impactful life and the Christian hope of eternal life.


The funeral was attended by prominent figures such as former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi; former governors Jim Nwobodo (Anambra), Orji Uzor Kalu (Abia), and Sam Egwu (Ebonyi); Senate Minority Whip Senator Osita Ngwu; and Senator Ben Obi, Chairman of the National Burial Committee.


Chief Onyia passed away on March 10, 2025, at the age of 73, after a brief illness. His distinguished career included serving as Minister of State for Foreign Affairs from 1999 to 2003 under President Olusegun Obasanjo. He also held key positions such as Chairman of the Nigeria Economic Joint Commission, the São Tomé and Príncipe Joint Boundary Commission, and the International Technical Commission for the National Boundary Commission.


President Bola Tinubu mourned Onyia's passing, describing him as a brilliant administrator and respected political leader, highlighting his contributions to Nigeria's political development.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs also paid tribute, recognizing Onyia as a trailblazer who significantly contributed to Nigeria’s global standing and advocated for peace and cooperation on the international stage.


Chief Dubem Onyia is survived by his wife, children, grandchildren, and numerous relatives and friends. His legacy as a statesman and patriot continues to be celebrated across Nigeria.
