Lere Olayinka, Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media to Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike, has accused former Vice President Atiku Abubakar of dishonesty regarding the selection process of the People's Democratic Party's (PDP) vice-presidential candidate for the 2023 elections. Olayinka emphasized that making such claims during the holy month of Ramadan is particularly regrettable.
Atiku had asserted that a PDP committee recommended three individuals for the vice-presidential slot, ranking former Delta State Governor Ifeanyi Okowa first, followed by Wike, and then former Akwa Ibom Governor Udom Emmanuel. Based on this ranking, Atiku stated he chose Okowa as his running mate.
Contradicting Atiku's account, Olayinka claimed that the committee's report actually favored Wike, who secured thirteen votes, whereas Okowa received only two. He criticized Atiku for allegedly distorting facts, especially during Ramadan, a period emphasizing truthfulness in Islamic teachings. Olayinka remarked, "It is unfortunate that Atiku could not respect the Holy Month of Ramadan and chose to propagate falsehoods."
Olayinka further clarified that Wike did not initially seek the vice-presidential candidacy but accepted Atiku's offer with certain conditions. He emphasized that Wike has no regrets about the outcome of the 2023 presidential election or Atiku's choice of running mate.
This exchange highlights ongoing tensions within the PDP and underscores the complexities surrounding the party's decisions leading up to the 2023 elections.
