Federal Government Stands Firm on Electricity Tariff Hike Despite Labour Opposition

The Federal Government has reiterated its stance on the recent electricity tariff hike and removal of subsidy in the sector, despite opposition from organised labour.

Florence Eke, spokesperson for the Ministry of Power, emphasized that Minister Adebayo Adelabu's justification of the tariff hike remains valid, citing the unsustainable burden of electricity subsidy on the government.

Eke emphasized that the government is not aligning with the trade unions' position on the issue. This comes amidst a two-week ultimatum issued by organised labour demanding a reversal of the tariff increase.

However, the Trade Union Congress and the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Joe Ajaero, maintain their opposition to the hike, arguing that tariffs should not be fixed in a deregulated sector.

The Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission announced the tariff hike for Band A customers, resulting in a significant increase in the cost of electricity.

Despite criticisms, the government stands firm on its decision, citing anticipated savings of N1.5 trillion and improved power supply for Band A customers.
