The political landscape in Imo State is heating up as Okigwe and Owerri zones engage in a fierce battle over who will succeed Governor Hope Uzodimma in the 2027 gubernatorial race.
Okigwe zone's leaders, in a bold move, have asserted their right to produce the next governor, challenging Governor Uzodimma's commitment to the Imo Charter of Equity, which mandates power rotation among the state's geopolitical zones.
This assertion has ignited tensions, with Owerri zone leaders mobilizing support to uphold the Charter.
The demand from Okigwe zone is reportedly backed by a former governor from the zone, who has garnered support beyond its borders to challenge the status quo. Critics of the Charter, including allies of the former governor in Owerri zone, denounce it as undemocratic, arguing against what they perceive as a predetermined allocation of power.
In response, leaders from Owerri zone, led by former Minister of Interior, Capt Emmanuel Iheanacho, are rallying support to maintain the zone's bid for the governorship. Though no official contenders have emerged from Owerri zone, speculation is rife about four prominent politicians preparing to enter the race.
