The Federal Ministry for Environment has announced its intention to conduct periodic reviews of the plans of both international and indigenous oil companies, in collaboration with the National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA), to ensure compliance with the goal of ending routine gas flaring by 2030. This disclosure was made by the Minister for Environment, Dr. Iziaq Salako, during a national stakeholders' engagement meeting on methane mitigation and reduction in Nigeria’s oil and gas sector held in Abuja on Tuesday.
Methane, a potent greenhouse gas known for its significant warming potential compared to carbon dioxide, has been identified as a major threat to both the environment and public health. In light of this, reducing methane emissions, particularly in the oil and gas sector, is crucial for advancing climate action and achieving various socio-economic benefits.
Dr. Salako emphasized the practical steps being taken by the government to address methane emissions, including the development of methane guidelines and the initiation of methane reduction projects. He highlighted Nigeria's commitment to methane reduction and achieving net-zero emissions by 2060, underscoring the importance of collaborative initiatives such as the methane mitigation and reduction project within the oil and gas sector.
The national stakeholders' engagement event served as a platform for discussing the complexities of methane mitigation and reduction within Nigeria's oil and gas industry. Representatives from the Africa Policy Research Institute highlighted the urgent need to address the impacts of methane emissions on climate and the environment. They emphasized the importance of proactive steps to reduce methane emissions, noting the potential co-benefits for public health, food security, and economic development.
