"Deputy Speaker Kalu Projects Completion of New Constitution for Presidential Assent by 2026"
In a significant development for Nigeria's constitutional landscape, Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Benjamin Kalu, announced that the country's new constitution is slated for completion and submission for presidential assent by 2026. This ambitious timeline was disclosed during the inauguration of the House Committee tasked with overseeing the review of the 1999 constitution.
Kalu emphasized the importance of providing ample time for the President to thoroughly examine proposed alterations and enact them into law ahead of the upcoming election year. He underscored the House's commitment to a thorough and inclusive review process, noting that numerous bill proposals have already been received, covering a wide range of amendments and expansions.
Among the key areas of focus are proposals for the establishment of state police, granting states access to mineral resources, enhancing women's participation in politics, clarifying tax collection responsibilities between different levels of government, and introducing the position of Mayor for the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.
Kalu highlighted the resubmission of previously passed bill proposals that did not receive presidential assent during prior constitutional alteration processes. These include provisions related to the powers of the National Assembly and State Assemblies to summon the President and State governors, as well as directives for government policies to prioritize citizens' rights to food and food security.
The Deputy Speaker emphasized the dynamic nature of the constitutional review process and its pivotal role in fortifying Nigeria's democracy. He assured stakeholders of the House's openness to accommodating additional proposals aimed at further enhancing the Constitution.
Furthermore, Kalu expressed eagerness to receive executive-sponsored bill proposals aligned with the President's renewed hope agenda. This collaborative approach between the legislative and executive branches underscores a concerted effort to address pressing national issues and propel Nigeria towards a more equitable and prosperous future.
