Controversy Surrounds Christmas Gift: Okitipupa/Irele Constituents Reject Rice Distributed by Rep, Cite Safety Concerns

Constituents of Okitipupa/Irele Federal Constituency in Ondo State have raised alarms over the bags of rice distributed as Christmas and New Year gifts by their representative, Mr Jimi Odimayo. Videos circulating online show residents expressing concerns about the safety of the rice, describing it as dangerous for consumption due to alleged contamination with stones.

In a video, an elderly woman voiced her surprise at the unconventional rice gift, stating, "We are not hungry; we feed on our own, and nobody should come and give us poison to eat. If you eat this one, Ibukunolu (hospital) can't do the surgery." Another resident highlighted the presence of stones, claiming they outnumbered the actual rice.

In response to the allegations, Hon. Jimi Odimayo vehemently denied any wrongdoing, dismissing the claims as malicious attempts to tarnish his reputation. His media aide, Mr Victor Adedeji, issued a statement asserting that the distributed rice had undergone rigorous quality checks and was sourced from reputable suppliers.

"The public should know that the rice distributed was 'brown rice' approved by the federal government, of acceptable quality and suitable for consumption," reassured Hon. Odimayo. He further emphasized his commitment to community welfare, citing the distribution of relief materials and financial aid from his personal funds, a practice maintained since 2014.

As controversy continues to swirl, residents remain divided over the safety and suitability of the distributed rice, prompting further scrutiny into the matter.
