By Fredrick Njoku

Former Inspector General of Police, Sir (Dr.) Mike Mbama Okiro, CFR, NPM, mni, has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, who died on Sunday, July 13, 2024, after a brief illness in a London hospital. Okiro conveyed his condolences in a statement released by his media assistant, Ibitomi Supreme.

In his tribute, Chief Okiro described the late President as a patriotic leader who was passionate about the unity and progress of Nigeria. He recalled Buhari’s unwavering commitment to national cohesion, a principle he believed motivated the former military ruler to fight for the country's unity during the civil war and later return to democratic governance.

"President Buhari’s quest for unity and his devotion to the service of Nigeria contributed to his emergence as Head of State and, later, as a two-term democratically elected President," Okiro said. He acknowledged the late President’s legacy, highlighting his transformation from a military leader who once overthrew a democratically elected government to a statesman who submitted himself to democratic processes—running for the presidency three times before finally winning in 2015.

“His tough policy decisions, though sometimes controversial, were driven by a deep desire to restore stability and order in Nigeria. His tireless efforts as a leader were truly remarkable,” Okiro remarked.

Recalling a personal memory, the former IGP shared: "During my National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) year in 1977, when Buhari was the Military Governor of Borno State, I was one of four corps members selected to visit the Government House. Shaking hands with him remains one of the most memorable moments of my life. It reflected his accessibility and the profound impact he had even then." I also had multiple handshakes with him, years later between 2015 to 2018 when I became the Chairman of the Police Service Commission.

Offering his prayers and condolences, Okiro said: "It is with profound sadness that I, Sir Mike Mbama Okiro, CFR, NPM, mni, Inspector General of Police (Rtd.) and former Chairman of the Police Service Commission, received the news of the passing of President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR. On behalf of myself and my family, I extend my deepest condolences to the Buhari family, the government, and the people of Nigeria.

"President Buhari’s leadership and vision will be remembered for generations. His dedication to democracy, national security, and the prosperity of our country has left an indelible mark. As we bid him farewell, may his legacy inspire future generations to serve Nigeria with courage and integrity."

Chief Okiro concluded by praying for the peaceful repose of the late President’s soul and asked God to grant him eternal rest and forgiveness.
