Calm Down Nigeria Initiative Supports Local Government Autonomy
Calls on Presidency to Institutionalize Annual Engagement with Local Government Leaders
The Calm Down Nigeria Initiative has expressed strong support for full local government autonomy, while urging the Presidency to institutionalize an annual event that brings together the 774 Local Government Chairmen in Nigeria with the President.
According to the group, such a gathering would foster formal and strategic communication between the Federal Government and Local Government administrators — the key players at the grassroots level.
The Initiative further proposed the introduction of an Annual Presidential Medal of Excellence for Local Government Chairmen. This, they said, would serve as a national recognition platform to celebrate the most outstanding and high-performing chairmen, thereby motivating others to improve service delivery and governance at the grassroots.
“This initiative will deepen the relationship between the Federal and Local tiers of government, and encourage a results-driven culture at the grassroots, where governance meets the people directly,” the group stated.
The Calm Down Nigeria Initiative emphasized that empowering local government leaders with recognition, encouragement, and direct presidential engagement would significantly contribute to national development from the bottom up.
