In a significant development that has brought relief to the residents of Enugu State, nine individuals, including two Reverend Sisters, who were abducted on the night of April 26, 2025, in Eburumiri, Ibagwa-Aka, Igbo-Eze South Local Government Area (LGA), have been successfully rescued.

Swift Response and Coordinated Efforts

The Executive Chairman of Igbo-Eze South LGA, Barrister Ugo Ferdinand Ukwueze, confirmed the successful rescue operation, emphasizing the collaborative efforts of local, state, and inter-state security agencies. The operation involved teams from Nsukka and neighboring Kogi State, showcasing a united front against criminal activities.

"Within 24 hours, we successfully rescued three of the abductees, and I am pleased to announce that all nine have now been reunited with their families and are receiving necessary medical evaluation and psychological support," Ukwueze stated.

Community Vigilance and Government Support

Barrister Ukwueze condemned the abduction, describing it as an assault on the community's collective dignity. He urged residents to remain vigilant and proactive in reporting suspicious activities, highlighting the importance of community involvement in ensuring security.

"It is imperative that we cultivate a culture of vigilance and proactive information-sharing. Suspicious activities should no longer be overlooked," he emphasized.

The chairman also lauded the prompt intervention of the state government, particularly the leadership of Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, in facilitating the rescue operation. He announced plans to restructure the security framework across the LGA and organize a Local Security and Stakeholder Summit aimed at developing long-term strategies for community safety.

Broader Context of Insecurity

The successful rescue in Enugu comes amid a backdrop of increasing kidnappings and attacks on religious figures in Nigeria. In January 2025, two Reverend Sisters from the Immaculate Heart of Mary, Mother of Christ, were abducted in Anambra State and later released unconditionally after a week in captivity.

These incidents underscore the challenges faced by religious communities in the region, with various groups, including Boko Haram and Fulani herders, perpetrating violence and kidnappings.

Conclusion

The rescue of the nine abducted individuals in Enugu State serves as a testament to the effectiveness of coordinated security efforts and community involvement. As the state continues to grapple with security challenges, the commitment of local authorities and the support of residents remain crucial in ensuring the safety and well-being of all citizens.
