President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau, led a distinguished delegation to Enugu on Friday to pay tribute to the late Christian Chukwu, a revered figure in Nigerian football. Chukwu, fondly known as "Chairman," passed away on April 12, 2025, at the age of 74. He was celebrated for his remarkable contributions as both a player and coach, notably captaining the Green Eagles to their first Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) victory in 1980.

During the condolence visit to the Chukwu family residence, NFF First Vice President, Chief Felix Anyansi-Agwu, spoke on behalf of Gusau, describing Chukwu as a national hero whose legacy transcends generations. "The late Chukwu gave his all for the country. He served Nigeria with all his heart and is a hero even in death. One thing is clear: Chukwu can never be forgotten given how well he served the country and his achievements both as a player and as a coach," he stated.
The NFF delegation emphasized their commitment to collaborating with the Chukwu family to ensure a befitting burial for the football legend. Gusau, through Anyansi-Agwu, affirmed the federation's readiness to support every step of the burial process, stating, "We want to be on the same page with the family regarding the arrangements.
Emeka Chukwu, son of the late football icon, expressed gratitude for the NFF's support and solidarity. He assured that the family would soon announce the schedule for the final burial rites, acknowledging the federation's role in honoring his father's legacy.
The delegation included notable figures such as George Aluo, NFF Executive Committee member and Chairman of the Nigeria National League; Barrister Tony Ugwu, Chairman of the Enugu State Football Association; Barrister Ifeanyi Dike, Chairman of the Imo State Football Association; and Mr. Chikelue Iloenyosi, Chairman of the Anambra State Football Association.
Christian Chukwu's illustrious career spanned decades, during which he not only led the national team to continental glory but also contributed significantly as a coach, including a stint with the Kenyan national team. His dedication to the sport and the nation has left an indelible mark, inspiring future generations of footballers.
