JUST IN! Former APC Deputy Governor Dies

Professor Sonni Gwanle Tyoden, the former Deputy Governor of Plateau State, has passed away at the age of 74. He died on Sunday, May 4, 2025, in Jos, Plateau State, after a brief illness. 



Born on September 22, 1950, in Pushit District, Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State, Tyoden was a distinguished academic and politician. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Political Science from the University of Ibadan and later obtained his Master's and Doctorate degrees in International Relations and Political Economy from Lancaster University in the United Kingdom. 


Tyoden began his career as an Assistant Secretary in the Plateau State Government's Ministry of Establishment in 1978. He transitioned to academia, joining the University of Jos as a lecturer and rising to the rank of Professor of Political Science in 1990. He served as the Head of the Department of Political Science at the University of Abuja and later returned to the University of Jos, where he became Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences.


From 2006 to 2011, Tyoden served as the Vice Chancellor of the University of Jos, contributing significantly to the institution's development. In 2015, he was elected Deputy Governor of Plateau State under the All Progressives Congress (APC), serving alongside Governor Simon Lalong until 2023. (W


Governor Lalong expressed deep sorrow over Tyoden's passing, describing him as a trusted political ally, confidant, teacher, and mentor. He noted that Tyoden brought significant stability, wisdom, and experience to their administration, working tirelessly to ensure a successful eight-year tenure.


Tyoden's contributions to academia and public service have left an indelible mark on Plateau State and Nigeria as a whole. His legacy as an educator and public servant will be remembered and cherished by many.
