The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has confirmed that social media activist Martins Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), will be released upon meeting specified bail conditions. EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale stated, “We will release him if he meets his bail conditions, and we will take the case to court as soon as possible.”
VDM was arrested on May 2, 2025, shortly after visiting a Guaranty Trust Bank (GTBank) branch in Abuja to address unauthorized deductions from his mother's account. The EFCC clarified that his arrest followed multiple petitions from various individuals alleging misconduct, and he is expected to be charged in court soon.
The arrest has sparked public outcry, with the Take It Back Movement condemning the action as unlawful and accusing both the EFCC and GTBank of complicity. Protests have been held in Abuja demanding VDM's immediate release.
The EFCC has not publicly disclosed the specific bail conditions for VDM's release. The Minority Caucus in the House of Representatives has called for his immediate release or prompt arraignment in court, emphasizing the importance of due process and constitutional rights.
As of now, VDM remains in EFCC custody, with his release contingent upon meeting the undisclosed bail conditions.
