The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is reportedly under significant pressure not to register Team New Nigeria (TNN) as a political party ahead of the 2027 general elections. TNN, a political movement that submitted its application for registration in May 2024, alleges that high-level political interests are attempting to block its registration due to its growing popularity across Nigeria.
According to TNN's spokesperson, Dr. Mohammed Shaibu, INEC acknowledged receipt of the application but has not made further progress. Shaibu expressed disappointment over INEC's inaction, stating that despite the passage of the 90-day threshold within which the Commission's guidelines require a response, there has been no update. He also claimed that INEC is facing pressure from members within its ranks who are affiliated with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and are allegedly attempting to prevent TNN's registration.
TNN has called on INEC to uphold its neutrality and integrity by acting in accordance with the law. The group urges the Commission to process its application without bias, emphasizing that Nigerians are watching how INEC handles the situation, which will influence public trust in the Commission's ability to conduct credible elections in 2027.
This development occurs amid broader concerns about INEC's responsiveness to new political party registrations. As of March 2025, INEC had received 91 applications for the registration of new political parties. Some opposition groups allege that INEC is intentionally obstructing these registrations, a claim the Commission denies.
In response to these challenges, the House of Representatives has passed a bill seeking to remove the responsibility of registering and regulating political parties from INEC and transfer it to an independent body. The proposed legislation aims to establish the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties, which would oversee the registration, regulation, and funding of political parties in Nigeria.
As the situation unfolds, TNN has urged its supporters to remain calm and patient. The group continues to advocate for its registration, emphasizing its commitment to offering Nigerians an alternative political platform ahead of the 2027 elections.
