A U.S. citizen has issued a 48-hour ultimatum to Nigeria's Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and Guaranty Trust Bank (GTBank), demanding the immediate release of Nigerian activist and influencer Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan. The individual warned that if VeryDarkMan is not released by Monday evening, the U.S. military might intervene.
In a video posted on social media, the woman, who identified herself as "the mama with a very big bag," addressed the EFCC and GTBank, stating: "Free VeryDarkMan before Monday evening or a message will be sent by the U.S. military."
VeryDarkMan was reportedly arrested on May 2, 2025, shortly after visiting a GTBank branch in Abuja to address alleged unauthorized deductions from his mother's account. The arrest was carried out by masked individuals, whose identities remain unclear, leading to speculation about whether they were affiliated with the EFCC or the Department of State Services (DSS).
The incident has sparked widespread reactions on social media, with supporters expressing concern over the circumstances of the arrest and the potential implications of the U.S. citizen's warning. While some view the ultimatum as a show of solidarity, others question the appropriateness and potential consequences of such a threat.
As of now, there has been no official response from the EFCC, GTBank, or U.S. authorities regarding the ultimatum or the status of VeryDarkMan's detention.
