In a significant display of political dissent, hundreds of women from Rivers State staged a protest in Port Harcourt, demanding the reinstatement of Lady Valerie Fubara, the suspended First Lady of the state.

Protest Disrupts Empowerment Programme

The protest occurred during an empowerment programme organized by Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Remi Tinubu, as part of the “Renewed Hope Initiative.” The event was disrupted when participants began chanting “Lady Valerie!” and exited the venue, expressing their dissatisfaction with the current political situation in the state.

Background: Suspension of Governor Fubara

The protest appears to be a reaction to recent political developments in Rivers State. On March 18, 2025, President Bola Tinubu declared a state of emergency in the state, suspending Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy Ngozi Odu, and members of the state's House of Assembly. Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas (Retd) was appointed as the Sole Administrator of Rivers State.

Efforts to Calm Protesters Unsuccessful

Efforts by Mrs. Ibas Ibok-Ete, wife of the Sole Administrator, to address and calm the protesters were unsuccessful. The women refused to be addressed and continued to express their dissatisfaction, demanding the reinstatement and recognition of Lady Valerie Fubara.

Lady Valerie Fubara: A Symbol of Unity

Lady Valerie Fubara has been recognized for her commitment to fostering peace and empowerment in Rivers State. She was honored with the International Peace Ambassador Award by the International Association for World Peace Advocates for her efforts in promoting peace and empowerment.

Conclusion

The protest highlights the deepening political divisions within Rivers State and raises questions about the reach and reception of federal initiatives at the state level amid ongoing political unrest. As of press time, neither the First Lady’s office nor Lady Valerie Fubara has released an official statement regarding the incident.
