Today, I had the pleasure of receiving in audience Mr. Emmanuel Uwakwem and his team from the Corporate Accountability and Public Participation Africa (CAPPA), who paid me a courtesy visit at the Government House, Owerri, as part of their sub-national advocacy efforts.

Our discussion centered on the significant role media plays in advancing healthy food policy, particularly as it relates to the urgent need to reduce the consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) in Imo State. The team highlighted the public health dangers associated with excessive intake of sugary drinks and emphasized the importance of government involvement in promoting healthier alternatives—especially through youth-led initiatives.

During the visit, the CAPPA team graciously donated a branded campaign T-shirt and various advocacy materials from their initiative. I deeply appreciated this thoughtful gesture and commend the team for their dedication and strategic approach to public health advocacy.

I expressed my delight at the visit and reiterated my commitment, through my office, to facilitate their engagement with relevant stakeholders across Imo State. I also assured them of my unwavering support in pushing forward well-meaning public health campaigns such as this, which aim to safeguard the health and wellbeing of our people.

I commend the CAPPA team for their proactive efforts and bold advocacy. The message of “SSB Tax Saves Lives” is not only timely but necessary, and I am glad to be a partner in amplifying this cause.

My doors remain open to progressive collaborations geared towards building a healthier, more informed Imo State.

Together, we can change the narrative.

Ambrose Nwaogwugwu,

Senior Special Assistant to Imo State Governor.
