The Nigerian film industry is mourning the loss of veteran Nollywood actress Nkechi Nweje, who passed away on March 21, 2025, at 60, after a brief illness.
Nkechi Nweje was renowned for her compelling portrayals of motherly roles in films such as Royal War, Festival of Sorrow, and Coming Back from Congo. Her recent project, The Debt, premiered on YouTube shortly before her passing.
Colleagues and fans have expressed grief and paid tribute to the late actress. Producer Stanley Ajemba, known as Stanley Ontop, shared on Instagram:
"Nollywood in tears as we lost one of our vibrant actresses, @nkechi.nweje, after a brief illness. I haven’t been able to post since this morning because it felt like a dream."
Veteran actress Rita Edochie also mourned Nweje's passing, posting a candlelight image with the caption:
"This world is really not our home."
Nkechi Nweje is survived by her husband, Dr. Azubuike Nweje, a director with the Anambra State Ministry of Health, and their six children.
Her passing follows the recent deaths of other Nollywood actors, including Columbus Irosanga, Pat Ugwu, and Asa Koko, marking a period of significant loss for the industry.
