Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has expressed optimism about securing his release from the Department of State Services (DSS) custody by the end of April 2025. During a recent visit by Engr. Ikenna Ellis-Ezenekwe, President-General of the Igbo Community Association (ICA) in the Federal Capital Territory, Kanu conveyed his confidence in his legal team's efforts and his hope for imminent freedom.

Ellis-Ezenekwe reported that Kanu appeared healthier, had gained weight, and was in high spirits despite his prolonged detention. Kanu took the opportunity to criticize the perceived leadership vacuum within the Igbo community, expressing disappointment over the lack of prominent voices advocating for the region's interests. He emphasized that this neglect has allowed the Igbo people's concerns to be marginalized during a critical period.

Reflecting on historical instances of neglect, Kanu cited the case of Ralph Uwazurike, another pro-Biafra activist who, according to Kanu, was abandoned by his own people during his imprisonment. He warned that such neglect could weaken the struggle for self-determination. Kanu reiterated his call for a referendum, asserting that he has committed no crime other than urging the Igbo people to assert their rights.

In his statement, Ellis-Ezenekwe directly appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, urging him to intervene in Kanu's case. He reminded the president of his past role in the pro-democracy movement and called on him to demonstrate the political will to secure Kanu's release. Ellis-Ezenekwe emphasized that Kanu's continued detention symbolizes political repression rather than justice.

As Kanu awaits the outcome of his legal battle, his supporters are rallying for renewed advocacy, with growing calls for the Nigerian government to either release him or expedite judicial proceedings. The coming weeks will determine whether Kanu's optimism is well-founded or if his prolonged detention will continue to stir political tension in Nigeria's Southeast.
