The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, has officially inaugurated the Utako Farmers Market in Abuja, marking Nigeria's first solar-powered marketplace. This eco-friendly facility spans 3,000 square meters and features 50 lock-up shops, 40 informal stalls, and seven warehouses.

Represented by the FCT Minister of State, Dr. Mariya Mahmoud, Wike emphasized that the market represents a significant advancement in the FCT's commercial infrastructure and economic development. He highlighted that this initiative reflects the administration's dedication to fostering economic growth and enhancing residents' quality of life.
Dr. Mahmoud described the market as a hub for economic empowerment and agricultural excellence, providing a direct link between producers and consumers. She noted that the facility would enable farmers to sell directly to buyers, thereby eliminating intermediaries, reducing post-harvest losses, and increasing rural incomes.
Ambassador Maureen Tamuno, the Group Managing Director and CEO of Abuja Investments Company Limited (AICL), underscored the project's alignment with Sustainable Development Goal 11, which aims to make cities inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable. She stated that the reliable and clean energy supply would allow traders to operate longer hours and better preserve perishable goods, ultimately boosting their income.
The Utako Farmers Market serves as a model for future market developments in Nigeria, showcasing the potential of integrating renewable energy solutions into commercial infrastructure. This initiative is expected to support local farmers, empower small-scale agribusinesses, and ensure that fresh, quality produce is readily accessible to residents of the FCT.
