The Lagos State Police Command has provided clarification regarding the arrest of 18-year-old Alabi Quadri, who gained public attention during the 2023 presidential campaign for standing in front of Labour Party candidate Peter Obi’s convoy.'
According to a statement by Police Public Relations Officer CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, Quadri's arrest was linked to a violent street altercation that occurred on January 22, 2025, in the Amukoko area of Lagos. The incident involved clashes between youth groups, resulting in injuries to bystanders and property damage. Subsequent investigations, supported by eyewitness accounts and victim testimonies, led to the arrest and court arraignment of Quadri and four others. They were remanded to a correctional facility pending legal proceedings.
However, Quadri's legal counsel, Inibehe Effiong, contends that his client was wrongfully implicated. Effiong alleges that local individuals falsely accused Quadri of involvement in the street fight, leading to his arrest. He further claims that Quadri was initially charged with armed robbery, a charge later dropped due to insufficient evidence, resulting in Quadri's release on April 17, 2025.
The case has sparked public discourse on the importance of thorough investigations and the protection of individual rights within the justice system.
