Recent reports suggesting that Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara is planning to defect from the People's Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) have been firmly denied by his office.
Jerry Omatsogunwa, the governor’s Special Assistant on Electronic Media, addressed the rumors on April 24, 2025, stating, “I doubt if the governor is even aware of the rumored defection right now that he wants to defect. As it stands now, we are still in the PDP, and nothing has changed.” He emphasized that Governor Fubara remains a committed member of the PDP and continues to serve as the Deputy Chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum.
The speculation about Governor Fubara's alleged defection surfaced following similar moves by other PDP governors, including Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, who officially joined the APC earlier this week. However, Omatsogunwa dismissed the reports, suggesting that the governor might not even be aware of the rumors circulating about his supposed defection.
In response to unconfirmed reports of a potential meeting between Governor Fubara and President Bola Tinubu in London, Omatsogunwa neither confirmed nor denied the meeting. He remarked that if such a meeting did occur, it would be a positive step toward finding a way forward for the state.
As of now, there has been no official statement from Governor Fubara himself regarding the defection rumors. His spokesperson's comments suggest that the governor remains focused on his duties and has not expressed any intention to leave the PDP.
