What began as a series of minor health concerns quickly spiraled into something much more unsettling. For weeks, I had been battling unusual stomach aches—sharp, unexplainable pains that came almost every time I ate meals prepared in our home. Initially, I chalked it up to stress or maybe an undiagnosed condition. Little did I know, something more sinister was brewing right under my nose.
A Suspicious Pattern Begins
I’m someone who tries not to jump to conclusions, especially when it involves family. I thought maybe my diet was changing or my body was reacting to something seasonal. I even scheduled a doctor’s appointment, but before that could happen, something truly unexpected occurred.
One quiet afternoon, I returned home from the market earlier than I normally do. I didn’t make a sound as I came through the door. Heading straight for the kitchen, what I saw stopped me in my tracks.
A Shocking Discovery
There, standing in front of the gas cooker, was my mother-in-law—whom we all affectionately call “Mama.” She didn’t hear me come in, and I stayed frozen for a few seconds, watching her. That’s when I saw it.
She was adding something into the pot of stew I had prepared earlier that morning.
It wasn’t seasoning, at least not anything I recognized. She quickly turned around when I called her name, clearly startled. Her face flushed, and her hands trembled slightly as she reached to cover the pot.
“Oh! My daughter, you’re back already?” she said with a shaky laugh, trying to appear casual.
I nodded and smiled, doing my best to mask the storm of emotions welling up inside me. Confusion. Betrayal. Fear. But most of all, curiosity.
A Quiet Test
I didn’t confront her—at least not right away. I needed to be sure of what I had seen. That night, during dinner, I pretended to eat as usual. I made my plate, sat at the table, and even held casual conversation with Mama and my husband. But I didn’t take a single bite.
Instead, I quietly slipped the food into Max’s bowl—our loyal German shepherd who never says no to a meal.
Ten minutes passed. Then twenty. I almost convinced myself I was imagining things. But suddenly, Max began to retch. He threw up violently and whimpered in pain.
My heart sank.
The Confrontation
I couldn’t hold it in any longer. I waited until the next morning and approached my husband privately. He was shocked but agreed to help me uncover the truth.
We decided to install a small camera in the kitchen—nothing too obvious, just enough to monitor activity while we were away. Over the next few days, we collected evidence.
What we saw confirmed our worst fears.
Mama had been tampering with the food multiple times, always when no one was around. We couldn't immediately determine what she was adding, but we knew it wasn’t right—or safe.
What Happened Next Will Surprise You
We took the video footage to a trusted family elder and asked for advice on how to handle the situation. It wasn’t easy—confronting a family member, especially an elder, never is. But it had to be done.
With the elder present, we sat Mama down and showed her the footage. At first, she denied everything, claiming she was only adding “natural herbs.” But when we pressed further and mentioned Max’s reaction, she broke down.
It turned out she had been using a traditional concoction—believing it would “protect” the household spiritually. She had no intention of harming anyone, or so she claimed, but her actions had unintended consequences.
Healing and Moving Forward
After a long and difficult conversation, we decided not to involve the police. Instead, we focused on resolving things within the family. Mama agreed to stop using the mixture and promised to be transparent about everything going forward.
We also brought in a doctor to check on our health and a traditional healer to advise on the herbs used. Thankfully, no permanent harm had been done.
The entire experience taught us an invaluable lesson about trust, communication, and the hidden complexities within family life.
