The Federal Government of Nigeria has proposed extending the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) program from one year to two years, aiming to enhance skills acquisition and boost youth employment.

This proposal was announced by the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Olatunji Alausa, during a meeting with the NYSC Director-General, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, in Abuja.

Dr. Alausa commended the NYSC for its proactive measures, particularly in digitizing the mobilization process to curb certificate fraud among foreign-trained graduates. He emphasized the importance of providing young Nigerians with opportunities to become job creators, suggesting that an extended service period would allow for a more comprehensive Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) program.

The proposed extension aims to equip corps members with practical skills for job creation and national development. Dr. Alausa also advocated for deploying more graduate teachers to rural schools to address manpower shortages. Brigadier General Nafiu expressed the NYSC's readiness to align with government policies and reforms, highlighting the scheme's commitment to national development.

This initiative reflects the government's dedication to enhancing the effectiveness of the NYSC in fostering youth entrepreneurship and employment.
