Governor Hope Uzodimma today welcomed Dr. Muyi Aina, Executive Director of the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), during a courtesy visit that underscored the state’s ambitious strides in healthcare transformation. The meeting highlighted Imo State’s ongoing efforts to enhance primary healthcare services and signaled the governor’s determination to elevate the sector to new heights.

Dr. Aina praised Governor Uzodimma for his remarkable leadership in revitalizing primary care facilities across Imo State, noting significant improvements in service delivery. During the visit, he updated the governor on two key initiatives—the IMPACT and Basic Health Care Provision Fund (BHCPF) projects—currently underway in the state. In response, the governor expressed gratitude for the NPHCDA’s collaboration but urged the agency to expand its support beyond these programs. He emphasized the urgent need for advanced medical equipment, such as MRI machines, and bolstered infrastructure to address critical gaps in the state’s health system.

“I am in for a total revamp of the health sector,” Governor Uzodimma declared, reaffirming his commitment to ensuring accessible, high-quality healthcare for all residents of Imo State.

Earlier in the day, Dr. Aina, accompanied by Dr. Ngozi Nwosu, Director of Primary Health Care Systems Development, and Dr. Amina Abdul, IMPACT Program National Coordinator, made a brief stop at the Owerri Municipal Council Primary Health Center. There, he lauded the dedication of the healthcare workers, describing their efforts as a cornerstone of the state’s progress. The delegation then proceeded to the newly built Umuokanne General Hospital in Ohaji/Egbema Local Government Area, where they were guided on a tour by Dr. Prosper-Ohayagha Success, the Honorable Commissioner for Health, and Rev. Sr. Dr. Maria Joannes Uzoma, Executive Secretary of the Imo State Primary Health Care Development Agency.

The state-of-the-art hospital left a strong impression on Dr. Aina, who hailed it as a testament to Governor Uzodimma’s vision for grassroots healthcare. “This is a remarkable achievement,” he said. “It reflects a deep commitment to improving the lives of the people at the community level.”

The visit, warmly received by state health officials, including Dr. Prosper-Ohayagha Success and Rev. Sr. Dr. Maria Joannes Uzoma, underscored a shared resolve between the state government and the NPHCDA to drive meaningful healthcare reforms. As Imo State continues to set a pace in primary healthcare development, Governor Uzodimma’s call for a broader partnership signals a bold step toward a healthier future for the state.
