A torrential downpour on Wednesday night, April 24, led to chaos at the Suleja custodial center, resulting in the escape of 119 inmates.
The heavy rain wreaked havoc on the center's infrastructure, causing severe damage, including a breach in the perimeter fence, which allowed the inmates to flee.
Despite the chaos, efforts were made to recapture the escapees. By the morning of Thursday, April 25, ten fleeing inmates had been re-arrested, with another three recaptured by the evening of the same day.
The pursuit continued, and on April 29, three more fleeing inmates were apprehended, bringing the total number of recaptured inmates to nineteen out of the 119 escapees.
Abubakar Umar, spokesperson for the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), confirmed the ongoing efforts, stating that the Service is actively working to arrest the remaining fleeing inmates.
However, he did not provide specific details on why information and images of the remaining 100 escapees had not been published.
Despite the absence of detailed information, a flash notice on the NCoS website on Sunday evening indicated an alert regarding the recent escapees from the Suleja custodial center, though the notice itself did not open for further details.
The NCoS assured the public that updates on the recapture efforts and any further developments would be provided as the situation progresses.
