In a troubling development, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar, Prof Florence Banku Obi, has disclosed the identities of three students who were abducted from the institution's premises just two days ago.
The abducted students have been identified as Dickson Oluwadamilola Ayomide, a student of Genetics and Biotechnology, Ojang Precious Ebijin, who studies Medicine and Surgery, and Ugwu Chukwuemeka, also enrolled in the Genetics and Biotechnology Departments of the University.
Eyewitnesses recounted the terrifying incident, which occurred on 29th March 2024, when armed assailants reportedly stormed Freedom Hostel, owned by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), around 7:00 PM, and forcibly seized the victims, spiriting them away to an undisclosed location.
Emmanuel Effiom, one of the eyewitnesses, described the abduction as brazen and terrifying, noting that the assailants wielded firearms and resorted to force when met with resistance.
Following the abduction, university authorities, in collaboration with relevant stakeholders including the Special Assistant Students’ Affairs, the Special Assistant Students’ Orientation to the Governor of Cross River State, the Student Union Government (SUG), and law enforcement agencies, have launched a comprehensive investigation into the incident. The primary objective is to secure the safe and swift release of the abducted students and ensure their wellbeing.
The abduction has sent shockwaves through the university community and raised concerns about the security of students on campus. Efforts are underway to address these security challenges and bolster measures to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future.
As the investigation unfolds, the university administration urges anyone with information pertaining to the abduction to come forward and assist in the efforts to secure the safe return of the kidnapped students.
