Tragedy struck in Lagos as a man, identified only as Azeez, met his demise after reportedly plunging into the lagoon in an attempt to flee arrest following accusations of stealing bags of cement. SP Benjamin Hundeyin, the spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, confirmed the incident to NAN on Sunday.
The director of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) in Lagos Central brought the case to the attention of the Ikoyi Police Division on Friday around 12:20 pm. According to reports, the director received a distress call around 10:45 am on Friday regarding an incident at the Lekki/Ikoyi Link Bridge.
Upon reaching the scene, the director encountered a sizable crowd gathered by the waterside, witnessing the lifeless body of a man who had drowned. The deceased was later identified as Azeez and pronounced dead by paramedics from Pre Hospital Care, Lagos.
Investigations revealed that Azeez was allegedly being pursued by a cement seller named Elijah Amos, who accused him of stealing bags of cement. In a desperate attempt to escape, Azeez jumped into the lagoon.
The police promptly responded to the scene, and Azeez's body was transported to Mainland General Hospital Mortuary, Yaba, for autopsy and preservation. This unfortunate incident serves as a grim reminder of the risks associated with criminal activities and attempting to evade justice.
