In a move aimed at bolstering political stability, Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu has officially ratified the country's Anti-Defection Bill, granting legal enforcement for lawmakers who defect to another party and subsequently lose their parliament seats.

The bill, which was approved on April 1, was proposed by Member of Parliament (MP) Ahmed Abdulla, representing the majority party, Maldivian Democratic Party.

The legislation extends its reach beyond MPs to include atoll and island councillors, as well as members of Women's Development Committees (WDCs).

Henceforth, individuals falling within these categories will be obligated to resign from their political positions in the event of switching parties. The Anti-Defection Bill stipulates that councillors and WDC members will forfeit their seats if they resign from their elected parties or switch allegiances.

Furthermore, independent members who align themselves with political parties will also be subject to the provisions outlined in the newly ratified law.
