In a ceremony held at DEARSAN Shipyard in Turkey, First Lady Oluremi Tinubu inaugurated the second 76-meter High Endurance Offshore Patrol Vessel (OPV) for the Nigerian Navy.
The launch signifies a significant step in Nigeria's efforts to safeguard its territorial waters and combat maritime threats, as stated by Commodore A. Adams-Aliu, the Director of Information for the Nigerian Navy.
The event, held on Friday, April 19, 2024, under the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu, underscores the nation's commitment to maritime security.
The construction of the vessel, which commenced in 2022, aims to bolster the Navy's fleet renewal efforts and enhance its capacity to combat various maritime crimes, including oil theft, piracy, illegal fishing, and smuggling of arms.
With a length of 76.90 meters, width of 11.90 meters, and a crew capacity of 47, the newly launched OPV is equipped with advanced features to ensure effective patrolling and surveillance of Nigeria's maritime environment.
This initiative aligns with the Federal Government's Blue Economy initiatives, aiming to harness the economic potential of Nigeria's maritime domain.
