In a recent development, the All Progressives Congress (APC) has taken disciplinary action against one of its members, the women leader of Badarawa/Malali ward, for alleged gross misconduct. In a letter dated March 31st, signed by the APC chairman and secretary of the ward, Ali Maishago and Zakkah Bassahuwa respectively, the party cited several infractions committed by the women leader, leading to her suspension.
According to the letter, the party accused the women leader, identified as Suleiman, of defaming the character of Governor Uba Sani and engaging in unauthorized publicity that undermined the governor's reputation. Additionally, Suleiman was alleged to have orchestrated an attack on the political adviser to the governor, Manzo Maigari, through intermediaries.
The party invoked Article 21, 2 (v) of the APC constitution to justify the suspension, emphasizing that Suleiman's actions contravened party regulations. The suspension is declared to be indefinite, pending a thorough investigation into the allegations leveled against her.
The genesis of the controversy stemmed from a widely circulated video delivered in the Hausa language, wherein Governor Uba Sani disclosed the significant debt burden inherited from the previous administration of former governor Nasir El-Rufai. Governor Sani revealed during a town hall meeting that the debt amounted to $587 million, N85 billion, along with 115 contractual liabilities, which had led to challenges in meeting salary obligations due to deductions from federal allocations.
In response to the governor's remarks, the APC women leader expressed criticism towards Governor Sani's administration, particularly his handling of the inherited debt. She cautioned against attributing blame solely to the former governor, Nasir El-Rufai, for the financial challenges faced by the current administration.
The suspension of the APC women leader underscores the party's commitment to upholding discipline and accountability within its ranks, particularly in matters concerning public statements and internal disputes. As the investigation progresses, stakeholders await further developments regarding the outcome of the allegations against Suleiman and the implications for her future within the party.
