Tinubu Directs Nigeria Customs to Return Confiscated Food Items Amidst National Food Emergency"

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has issued a directive to the Nigeria Customs Service to return food items confiscated at border communities to their owners, with the condition that they will be sold in Nigerian markets. This instruction, aimed at addressing the nation's current food crisis, was disclosed by the Comptroller General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Adewale Adeniyi, during an engagement with residents of border communities in Katsina.

Adeniyi emphasized that Nigeria is facing an urgent food situation, prompting the Customs Service to take proactive measures to combat the illegal exportation of food items and alleviate food shortages within the country. He highlighted the existence of the Export Prohibition Act, which prohibits the exportation of essential food items like maize, millet, yam, beans, and sorghum, and noted that this law would be reviewed once Nigeria achieves self-sufficiency in food production.

Furthermore, Adeniyi underscored the Customs Service's commitment to monitoring and ensuring that locally-produced food remains in Nigeria to mitigate food inflation and enhance food security. He urged residents of border communities to collaborate with the government in enforcing regulations that restrict the export of food items and other essential commodities.

During his visit to Katsina, CG Adeniyi paid homage to former President Muhammadu Buhari at his Daura country home, as well as to the Emir of Daura, Dr. Faruk Umar Faruk, and visited various border stations in the state.
