 Senate President's Comments on Soldiers' Killings in Delta State Draw Criticism

Civil society organizations and a security expert have rebuked Senate President Godswill Akpabio for his remarks linking the recent killings of 16 military personnel in Delta State to foreign mercenaries. 

Akpabio's comments came during a Senate session where the formation of a committee to investigate the killings was discussed. He suggested that the perpetrators might be foreigners, sparking outrage from various quarters. Auwal Musa Rafsanjani of CISLAC and Transparency International-Nigeria condemned Akpabio's stance, emphasizing that criminals should be held accountable regardless of their origin. 

Executive Director of CLEEN Foundation, Gad Peter, cautioned against premature conclusions, urging Akpabio to provide evidence to support his claim. Tunde Salman of Good Governance Team Nigeria labeled Akpabio's comments as unacceptable and called for justice for the slain soldiers.

 However, Emmanuel Onwubiko of HURIWA suggested that Akpabio's remarks were speculative. Meanwhile, Senate Committee on Defence Chairman Ahmad Lawan described the soldiers' killings as an assault on security and stability in the Niger Delta region, calling for thorough investigation and justice. 

The House of Representatives also mandated the Armed Forces to probe the incident and bring the perpetrators to book. Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori promised support for the families of the slain soldiers and assured measures to prevent future incidents. 

Additionally, Urhobo Traditional Rulers and the Urhobo Progress Union urged the Delta State government to establish an independent commission to investigate the crisis between Okuoma and Okoloba communities.
