The House Committee on Intergovernmental Affairs, 10th National Assembly, has announced plans to host a public hearing regarding the age limit for betting in Nigeria. Concerns over the welfare and protection of the nation’s youth have prompted this decision, as alarming reports indicate a growing number of teenagers turning to betting establishments for financial sustenance.

Hon. High Chief Canice Moore Chukwugozie Nwachukwu, the committee chairman and representative of Orlu/Orsu and Oru East Federal Constituency of Imo State, emphasized the urgency of addressing underage participation in betting, particularly in the digital realm. The forthcoming public hearing aims to gather insights from stakeholders, including youths and industry players, to examine the prevalent issues surrounding betting establishments.

While recognizing the economic significance of the betting industry, Hon. Nwachukwu stressed the need for stringent regulatory measures to prevent exploitation and malpractice. He advocated for a balanced approach that considers both the benefits and drawbacks of betting, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing the well-being of Nigeria’s youth.

Furthermore, Hon. Nwachukwu reaffirmed the committee’s commitment to revisiting legislation related to betting regulation, signaling the government’s dedication to promoting responsible gambling practices. This initiative reflects a broader effort to create a conducive environment for the nation’s youth to prosper while mitigating the risks associated with underage betting.
