"Gubernatorial Candidate Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour Discusses Leadership Dynamics in LP: Peter Obi's National Appeal vs. Local Realities"
![]() |
In an insightful interview on the Honest Bunch Podcast, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, the former gubernatorial candidate for the Labour Party (LP) in Lagos State during the 2023 general election, provided a nuanced perspective on the leadership qualities exhibited by Peter Obi, the party's presidential candidate. Rhodes-Vivour's commentary shed light on the delicate balance between national appeal and local political dynamics within the LP.
Rhodes-Vivour commended Peter Obi's admirable leadership qualities, asserting that he embodies the type of leader Nigeria needs at a national level. However, he cautioned that while Obi's attributes may be well-suited for the broader Nigerian context, they might not perfectly align with the intricate needs and complexities of their specific political landscape in Lagos State. He succinctly captured this sentiment by stating, "Peter Obi is the leader that we need for Nigeria, but not the politician we need for us."
During the discussion, Rhodes-Vivour also highlighted Obi's principled stance against vote-buying, citing the successful campaign in Lagos without resorting to such unethical practices. Despite Obi's ethical approach to politics, he faced a formidable challenge in the presidential race, securing third place behind President Bola Tinubu and Atiku Abubakar.
In contrast, Rhodes-Vivour's own political journey in the gubernatorial race ended in defeat against Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu. Despite the setback, Rhodes-Vivour demonstrated resilience by pursuing legal recourse, challenging the election results up to the Supreme Court. However, the apex court's unanimous decision in January 2024 upheld Sanwo-Olu's victory, dismissing Rhodes-Vivour's appeals and affirming the outcome of the March 18, 2023, governorship election.
