Enugu State Governor Advocates for Overhaul of Nigeria's Presidential Federalism

In a recent public lecture delivered at the London School of Economics, Enugu State Governor, Dr. Peter Mbah, addressed the critical issue of Nigeria's presidential federalism and its implications for socio-economic development. Governor Mbah expressed concern over the concentration of power and revenue at the central level, likening it to a situation where only a few children in a large family are burdened with excessive responsibilities, leading to eventual weakness and hardship for the entire family.

While acknowledging the recent transfer of railways and power to the Concurrent List as a positive step towards decentralization, Governor Mbah emphasized the need for further devolution of powers to the states. He commended the disposition of the President Bola Tinubu Administration towards this end, highlighting the importance of empowering federating units to drive development initiatives.

Governor Mbah underscored the urgency of addressing the flaws in Nigeria's federal system, emphasizing that the current framework hampers economic growth and perpetuates disparities among regions. Despite the challenges posed by the existing constitutional framework, he outlined his administration's strategic investments in key sectors such as security, health, education, agriculture, and water, aimed at revitalizing Enugu State's economy.

The governor's call for reform reflects growing awareness of the need to reevaluate Nigeria's federal structure to ensure equitable distribution of resources and foster sustainable development across all regions. As discussions on constitutional reforms continue, Governor Mbah's insights serve as a catalyst for broader dialogue and action towards a more inclusive and prosperous Nigeria.
