Imo State Assembly Urges Urgent Action to Avert Extinction Threat in Umuchima Community
The Imo State House of Assembly has taken decisive action to address the looming threat of extinction facing Umuchima community in Ideato South Local Government Area. Urged by the impending 2024 rains and the relentless onslaught of gully erosion, the Assembly rallied behind a motion for urgent intervention, spearheaded by Johnson Duru, the representative of Ideato South state constituency.
Duru's motion highlighted the dire consequences of the devastating gully erosion, which has already claimed a significant portion of the community and put the lives and properties of its inhabitants at risk. With close to 80 percent of the community teetering on the brink of collapse, the Assembly recognized the pressing need for immediate, urgent, and coordinated action.
In a show of solidarity and commitment, the Assembly unanimously agreed to undertake a solidarity visit to the erosion site, offering condolences to the affected community members and reassuring them of government intervention. Additionally, they resolved to escalate the matter by reaching out to national agencies such as the National Emergency Management Authority, the Federal Road Maintenance Agency, and the Federal Ministry of Works, urging them to prioritize the inclusion of Umuchima community road in the first quarter of 2024 emergency interventions.
However, amidst the collective resolve, dissenting voices surfaced, with the Deputy Minority Leader, Clinton Amadi, raising concerns about past failures in addressing the issue. Amadi highlighted previous instances where government contracts were awarded but left incomplete, emphasizing the need for accountability and proper investigation into the utilization of funds.
The Assembly's proactive stance underscores the gravity of the situation and the imperative for swift, decisive action to prevent the irreversible loss of lives, properties, and cultural heritage in Umuchima community. As the rains approach, time is of the essence, and the Assembly's plea for urgent intervention resonates not only within the hallowed halls of governance but also echoes the collective voice of a community on the verge of extinction.
