President Tinubu Initiates Special Presidential Panel for Overhaul of Suspended Social Investment Programmes
President Bola Tinubu has taken a decisive step in addressing concerns over alleged malfeasance in the National Social Investment Programme Agency by approving the establishment of a Special Presidential Panel (SPP). The SPP, spearheaded by the Coordinating Minister of the Economy and Minister of Finance, Mr. Wale Edun, aims to conduct a thorough review and reform of the suspended social investment programs, including the school-feeding initiative.
In response to the ongoing investigation into the management of the agency and its programs, Tinubu suspended all administered Social Investment Programmes, leading to the creation of the SPP. According to a statement signed by the Director of Information, Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Segun Imohiosen, the suspension was a precautionary measure pending the completion of the investigation.
The Edun-led panel, tasked by Tinubu, has been directed to immediately undertake a comprehensive review and audit of existing financial frameworks and policy guidelines governing the social investment programs. The goal is to implement a total re-engineering of the financial architecture with detailed modifications to procedures, ensuring transparent and accountable governance moving forward.
President’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, emphasized that the SPP, comprising ministers from strategic sectors, will adopt a multi-disciplinary approach to the reform effort. The panel includes the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof Ali Pate, Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Abubakar Bagudu, Minister of Information and National Orientation, Muhammad Idris, Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijjani, and Minister of State for Youth, Ayodele Olawande.
Tinubu expresses confidence that the panel will validate the trust placed in it by restoring lost public confidence in these vital programs. He envisions the ushering in of a new era characterized by open and accountable governance frameworks, designed to be impervious to abuse and incompetence, exclusively benefiting disadvantaged households across the nation. The establishment of the SPP marks a crucial step towards ensuring the effectiveness and integrity of social investment programs in Nigeria.
