"Police Inspector Fatally Shoots Colleague During Anti-Cultist Operation, Prompting Urgent Internal Investigations"

In a tragic turn of events, Police Inspector Jonathan Okouromi allegedly shot and killed Sergeant Abosele Akhere during an anti-cultist operation in the Ikponwosa/Egban community of Egor Local Government Area, Edo State. The incident unfolded around 9 pm on Sunday, sending shockwaves through the targeted community, which had long been gripped by fear due to suspected cultist activities.

The operation, led by operatives of the Edo State Police Anti-Kidnapping Squad and the Control Intelligence Rapid Response Squad, aimed to apprehend notorious cultists terrorizing the area. Sergeant Abosele Akhere successfully arrested a high-profile cultist known as 'Raggae,' only to be tragically shot from behind by Inspector Jonathan Okouromi, leaving the community in disbelief.

A witness, requesting anonymity, described the mysterious nature of the incident: "All of a sudden, Inspector Okouromi lifted his gun, pulled the trigger, and shot Akhere from the back. Nobody knew what happened or why he did that. He just fired him from behind. The man fell immediately and started bleeding."

The wounded officer was swiftly transported to the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, where he was pronounced dead by the attending doctor. Inspector Okouromi, realizing the gravity of his actions, reportedly fled the scene with his firearm. Meanwhile, the arrested cultist 'Raggae' managed to escape, and another individual, Mr. Agbontaen Monday, a member of the Eiye confraternity, was apprehended.

As the police intensify efforts to locate Inspector Okouromi, investigations are underway, and the body of the deceased police sergeant has been deposited at the mortuary. Police Public Relations Officer Chidi Nwabuzor, currently on holiday, was unavailable for comment, but assured that further details would be provided upon his return to the office.

This tragic incident bears resemblance to a recent event in Rivers State, where Inspector Nelson Abuante committed suicide after mistakenly shooting his colleague, Inspector Monday Gbaramana, during an arrest attempt. These incidents underscore the urgent need for comprehensive internal investigations within the police force to address such occurrences, ensuring accountability and restoring public trust.
