"Expulsion Shockwave: Fifteen Final-Year Law Students, Including Catholic Priest and University Lecturer, Ousted from IMSU Over Exam Malpractice"
In a decisive move before Christmas Day, Imo State University (IMSU), Owerri, has expelled fifteen final-year law students, with the list including a Catholic priest from the Orlu Diocese (whose identity is withheld) and a lecturer from the Department of Management Sciences. The expulsion comes as a result of their alleged involvement in various forms of examination malpractice.
An inside source at the university revealed that the announcement of the expulsions was made, triggering a wave of shock and concern among the academic community. The decision was spearheaded by an official of the university, who, according to reports, has threatened legal action against the institution's management if the expulsion is not officially ratified.
While the source acknowledged the severity of the expulsion, describing it as "very harsh," they admitted that the students were indeed guilty of the charges brought against them. However, the source emphasized that the expelled students should not be singled out as scapegoats, as a significant number of students across various departments were also involved in similar malpractices.
The malfeasance reportedly included hiring individuals to impersonate the students during examinations and the use of mobile phones to cheat. Notably, the Catholic priest involved allegedly hired a 'mercenary' to take an examination on his behalf, citing security concerns in the Orlu axis of the state that prevented him from traveling to Owerri for the exam. The priest's vehicle was reportedly shot at by unknown gunmen during his journey to Owerri, leading to his inability to be present for the examination.
Furthermore, the source disclosed that the group advocating for the expulsion opposed a female lecturer who was simultaneously pursuing a law degree while employed by the university.
In response to inquiries, the Public Relations Officer of the university, Sir Ralph Njoku-Obi, claimed to have no information on the matter at this time, leaving the university community and the public eagerly awaiting an official statement on this significant development.
